Drug abuse and many other social ills are destroying the community of Actonville in Benoni due to lack of recreational facilities.

To mitigate these social ills, the City of Ekurhuleni constructed three state-of-the-art parks to the tune of R3 million for residents of ActonVille.

These three parks include Actonville Park in Ghandi Street, Delair Street Park and Darling Street Park.

The parks were handed over to the community by the Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina and MMC for Environment and Waste Management Services Cllr Ndosi Shongwe on April 30.

Nishaan Dhani, a 30-year old recovering drug addict is over the moon following the opening of these facilities.

“I wish we had such parks much earlier and I am sure I would have not engaged in drugs then,” he said.

Nishaan is advocating for the youth to take advantage of these recreational facilities and protect them from vandalism.

“When I saw the municipal officials busy working on these parks I was happy, as I knew that these facilities will improve the lives of other young people. I have overheard other young boys who are already planning to open a body building team using the park’s out door gym equipment, while parents are excited about the play equipment for the little children in the neighborhood,” said Nishaan.

Nearby  households have pledge to take care of the parks by daily monitoring them and safe keeping the keys to avoid people who stay up until late hours at the park which may trigger criminal activities.
