Gauteng Wetlands Day Celebrations

Gauteng Department of Agriculture on Friday hosted a wetland celebration in Mofokeng Section Katlehong, for the Gauteng Province Wetlands Day.

Ekurhuleni School for the deaf choir opened the celebration with the National Anthem. Faith Mabindisa Head of Department Environmental Resource and Waste Management Service in the City of Ekurhuleni, opened and welcomed all guests.

Koketso Primary School rendered an educational item under the theme Wetlands and Climate Change.

Director Environmental Empowerment Services Happy Baloyi emphasised on the importance of wetlands during her interview with Lesedi Fm

“The wetlands are sponges that are able to absorb water during flooding season and when there is drought, wetlands release the stored water” she said.

The department has set a directorate that is responsible for mapping out all wetlands around the province
